Before St. Martin’s was built in 1957, monthly communion services were held in the Gaer Junior School by Dean Ellis-Evans and Revd. Granville Edgar. Sunday school was also held at the school (weekly). A Gaer Church Appeal Fund Executive Committee was formed to achieve the aim of having a church on the Gaer. A Lenten Appeal was organised in 1956 in conjunction with St. Woolos Parish Church Council. Considerable preliminary work was undertaken before it was agreed that a REEMA building was most suitable. A contract for a REEMA building was signed in June 1957.
A considerable sum of money was borrowed to complete the building and furnishings and the immediate aim was to clear the debt as soon as possible. Provision had been made for a permanent church building on the site and £500 had been set aside to start a Building Fund.
A dedication service was held on 5th December 1957 led by the Archbishop of Wales.
On December 3rd 2017 a service was held celebrating the 60th anniversary. The Right Reverend Richard led the service and preached.
